Frequently asked questions about massage.

What different styles of massage are available to me, and what are the differences between them?

There are many different styles of massage available to suit your particular needs such as relaxation, sports, energy work, and structural alignment. All types of massage incorporate one or more modalities into a session. Some modalities include acupressure, lymphatic drainage massage, myofascial release, swedish, hot stone massage, and thai yoga massage.

Acupressure: One of the oldest forms of healing arts originating from Asia. Involves the use of finger pressure applied to specific points along the body. Designed to help promote a free flow of energy throughout the body by unblocking or releasing stuck energy pathways along the body known as meridians or channels.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage: A specialized form of massage designed to help stimulate the flow of lymph throughout the body. Involves the use of light pressure along the body to help move built up fluid toward drainage areas. Utilized to help detoxify the body and reduce swelling or excess fluid.

Myofascial Release: Myofascial release incorporates stretching techniques to help release the fascia or coverings of the internal body structures and organs. Using light stretching, myofascial release aims to equalize muscle tension in the body.

Swedish: A combination of techniques using gentle to deep pressure along the body. May include effleurage (a sliding or gliding technique), petrissage (kneading), compression, friction, vibration, and tapotement.

Reiki: A form of energy work utilized for stress reduction and relaxation. Involves the use of hands placed on the body, generally clothed, with the intention of healing and balance. Helps promote feelings of peace, security, and well-being.

Thai Yoga Massage: Often referred to as assisted yoga, Thai Yoga Massage incorporates passive stretching and gentle compression applied by the practitioners hands and feet. Traditionally performed on a floor mat, Thai Yoga Massage is also offered on a massage table. Clients are encouraged to wear loose comfortable clothing as this modality is performed fully clothed.

What are the benefits of receiving massage, and how soon can I expect to see a change?

There are many benefits to receiving massage such as feelings of relaxation, increased circulation, relaxed and softened muscles, lower blood pressure, improved range of motion, reduced muscle spasms and cramps, increased joint flexibility and more.

What can I expect before, during and after a massage therapy session?

You should expect to be treated in a professional manner at all times. Your massage therapist will start by having you fill out an intake form which helps inform the therapist of any recent or past injuries or ailments. Your therapist will then check in to see how you are feeling before the massage and discuss what forms of massage may be appropriate for you.

You should expect a safe and professional environment, to always be covered except for the area being worked, complete privacy for undressing and dressing, and to undress to your level of comfort. You will be treated with respect both verbally and non-verbally, without judgment and have complete control over the entire session.

After your session you may feel relaxed and rested, or refreshed and ready to continue with your daily activities. Always remember to drink plenty of water after your session.

Do I have to go somewhere to receive a massage or can I have a therapist come to me?

While there are many spas, private offices, and integrative health centers located in and around Nashville, TN, there are Massage Therapists willing to travel to your home for sessions. Your therapist will bring either a massage table or chair with them. All you need is a space large enough to fit the table. Generally an area about 7 by 9 feet will be enough room.

What can I do to prepare for a massage therapy session?

Try to give yourself ample time to either drive to your therapists’ location or unwind if your therapist is coming to you. If you need to eat you may want to have a light snack. Always try to drink plenty of good quality, clean water throughout the day.
